The two stone houses were erected between 1858-1869 on land subdivided by local speculator, Charles Nicholson. The originally identical houses are constructed of squared rubble basalt with stucco facade, slate roof, gothic barge boards and unusual projecting stair enclosure in an eclectic design which combines gothic with italianate elements.
The houseswere erected as speculative houses in a style and construction technique traditionally associated with the first years of settlement in Victoria. The houses as notable examples of quality building development on the Collingwood Flat, are of local architectural significance. The two visually related buildings of eclectic design have been variously occupied by tradesmen and local merchants with no important historical associations.
Both Nos 39 and 41 have been substantially altered internally, No 39 remaining the better example being virtually intact externally. No 41 has been radically transformed with extensive additions to the rear as well as the facade being altered.
