Please note that this is a "Building Citation", not a "Statement of Significance". For further information refer to the Building Citation held by the City of Yarra. History: By 1911 John Levy owned a wooden house in Victoria Crescent (west side) between Mollison and Albert Streets, which he leased to Dudley Smelling and which had a NAV of ?14. In 1912 the house was vacant. In 1913 a wooden house was listed (NAV ?26) with Margaret Levy owner and John Levy occupant. Description: The house at 6 Victoria Crescent is a single-storey, asymmetrical Edwardian timber cottage, with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. The street facade is clad with timber blocks in imitation of ashlar. The projecting front section has a half-timbered and pressed metal gable end surmounted by a metal finial. Beneath the gable, the windows have a ripple iron awning. The verandah is supported on turned posts with carved brackets and fretted frieze. The verandah has a recent concrete floor. There are two roughcast rendered chimneys with terracotta pots. Significance: The house at 6 Victoria Crescent, Abbotsford is of local architectural significance. The house is a typical example of a timber Edwardian villa, and is now a prominently sited heritage element in an area eroded by later development. |
