The hotel was licensed until 1916 and operated as a Cobb and Co coach depot. The theatre is the oldest known purpose-built theatre attached to a hotel in Australia, evoking the days of stage entertainment during Victoria's gold rush. The timber sloping stage and high coved plaster ceiling remain intact. The buildings have been used almost continuously as Tarnagulla's social and civic centre since the 1860's. In summary, the Tarnagulla Public Hall is of historic importance for the following reasons: 1) the former Victoria Theatre and Hotel features an externally intact complex recalling the heady days of Victoria's gold rush towns. 2) the theatre is the oldest known purpose-built theatre attached to a hotel in Australia. 3) the buildings have been used almost continuously as Tarnagulla's social and civic centre since the 1860's. |
