What is significant?
Bena State School No. 3062, originally constructed in 1921 with later additions, at 40 Greens Road, Bena.
Why is it significant?
Bena State School No. 3062 is of local social significance to the township and district of Bena as a place which has played an important role in the development of the Bena community since its settlement.
It is also of historic and aesthetic interest as, when originally built, it was the first of its type in the State and became the basis of a standard design for schools in other locations, which was known as the "Bena type". However, evidence of the original fabric is now lost under later alterations, which diminishes its significance in this regard.
While the physical heritage fabric of the building is partially compromised, the school building retains cultural heritage significance to Bena as one of the few remaining public buildings in the former pioneering township. In the absence of other significant remaining historic structures to signify the former pioneering history of this township, the school building gains an importance additional to the heritage values of the physical structure alone.
