The chapel was built to serve both as a church and schoolhouse for the considerable population of Ceres which in the 1850s was a burgeoning vineyard and grazing district. The structure is a typical Wesleyan Chapel erected without ostentation or direct reference to historical style. The chapel is constructed of ubiquitous Barrabool freestone donated by Nichols McCann, a local stonemason and quarryman of the Ceres district and is part of an identifiable group of buildings in the small village.
