The building at 100-102 Main Street, Stawell, makes a significant contribution to the architectural and visual amenity of the predominantly 19th and early 20th century commercial streetscape. The form and rear sections of the building also contribute to the architectural amenity of the area. Built after 1871 for William Anthony Senior, the building appears to be in fair condition when viewed from the front and rear.
The building at 100-102 Main Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian style. These qualities include the simple parapet with the moulded capping and flanking consoles, and the four bayed first floor composition of timber framed double hung windows with moulded architraves and label moulds above. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the symmetrical composition, two storey height, rendered and painted brick wall construction, and the two ground floor shopfront openings (but not the shopfronts). The rear double hipped roof forms clad in galvanised corrugated iron, two storey wing with the parapeted gable end, timber framed double hung windows and the single storey gable wing with horizontal weatherboard wall cladding also contribute to the significance of the place.
The building at 100-102 Main Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with commercial developments in Stawell during the second half of the 19th century. In particular, this building has associations with William Anthony Snr., original owner who appears to have instigated construction soon after 1871.
Overall, the building at 100-102 Main Street is of LOCAL significance.
