The house at 26 Fletcher Street, Essendon to the extent of its c.1905 era form, materials and detailing is significant. The house is a bi-chromatic brick villa. Asymmetrical in plan it has a hip roof clad in slate tiles with a projecting bay and there is a return verandah with a cast-iron frieze. The projecting bay has a pair of round-headed windows. There is another pair of double hung sash timber in the main elevation beneath the verandah, the front door has sidelights and highlights. Other original features include the paired eaves brackets and bi-chromatic brick chimneys. Later additions and alterations, the front and side fences and other buildings on the site are not significant. How is it significant? The house at 26 Fletcher Street, Essendon is of local historic significance to the City of Moonee Valley. Why is it significant? Historically, it is significant as a rare and relatively early surviving example of the first phase of suburban development in this part of Essendon in the late nineteenth century. (Criteria A & B) |
