Wana is of historic, architectural and aesthetic significance to the City of Banyule. Why is it significant? Wana is an excellent example of an attic style bungalow with Arts and Crafts features and reveals the influence of the prominent English architect C. F. A. Voysey. (Criteria D & F) Both it and the nearby 'Aringa' at 23 Castle Street illustrate the influence of international architectural styles in the area and the growth of Eaglemont as a prosperous suburb of Melbourne during the 1920s. (Criteria A & E) The house is of historic significance for its long association with the Heffernan family, who owned the place for more than fifty years. It is especially significant for its connection to Edward Bonaventure Heffernan, a local doctor and his son, also called Edward Heffernan, a noted Melbourne artist. (Criterion H) |
